What’s the difference between the MRS 1000 and MRS 2000 metal roof panels?

Seam height and strength. The Metal Roofing Systems MRS 1000 is a 1.5-inch snap-lock architectural panel held down with concealed clips. The MRS 2000 is a 1.75-inch structural snap-lock panel with strong spanning capability, and its integral seam stays weathertight without a mechanical seamer.

Are MRS metal roof panels approved for Florida hurricane zones?

The MRS 1000 is. Metal Roofing Systems lists high-velocity hurricane zone Florida Product Approval for it, along with UL 580 Class 90 uplift testing and engineering to current ASCE 7 design standards. The MRS 2000 also carries UL 580 Class 90. Approval numbers can be checked on floridabuilding.org before the permit is filed.

Which MRS metal works best for a home near the Gulf or the bay?

Aluminum, if you want the manufacturer’s coastal coverage. MRS 1000 and MRS 2000 panels come in Galvalume, aluminum and copper with a Kynar 500 PVDF finish, but Metal Roofing Systems offers its 35-year coastal finish warranty on aluminum only. Its standard 40-year limited finish warranty covers Galvalume and aluminum.

How steep does my roof need to be for MRS 1000 or MRS 2000 panels?

At least 3:12. Metal Roofing Systems lists a 3:12 minimum pitch for both snap-lock panels, installed over a solid substrate with ice and water shield (recommended) or synthetic underlayment. Flatter sections, such as some porch roofs, need a different product.

Are MRS 2000 metal roof panels fire and impact rated?

Yes. Metal Roofing Systems lists the MRS 2000 with a UL 790 Class A fire rating and UL 2218 impact resistance, and the panel is Energy Star certified. A 20-year weathertight warranty is also available from the manufacturer on the MRS 2000.
