In addition to being the #1 Roofing Company in St. Petersburg, Mitchell Roofing Company is also a licensed solar contractor. We proudly feature the GAF Energy Solar line. When you add solar from GAF Energy, your roof can produce clean electricity at a cost that’s lower than your utility company. Monthly electric bill savings, plus any tax credits or incentives available when you install, can offset part of the cost. Incentives change often, so check what’s current before you buy. Solar from GAF Energy is designed to be direct-to-deck. Compared to traditional rack-mounted solar systems, our roof-integrated solar panels have superior water-shedding qualities. Solar shingle questions

What is GAF Timberline Solar?

It’s a solar roof made with GAF Energy Timberline Solar ES 2 energy shingles, which nail onto the roof alongside regular Timberline asphalt shingles. GAF calls it the world’s first nailable solar shingle, so the same crew and tools install the whole roof, with no rack-mounted panels drilled into it. Each energy shingle is rated at 57 watts.

Are GAF solar shingles rated for Florida wind and storms?

Yes. GAF lists Timberline Solar ES 2 at ASTM D3161 Class F for wind, UL 790 Class A for fire and UL 7103 as a building-integrated solar roof, and GAF Energy’s owner, Standard Industries, reports Miami-Dade County approval and resistance to winds up to 130 mph. GAF’s limited warranties don’t cover hail damage.

Will adding solar shingles raise my Florida property taxes?

Not for the solar part. Under s. 193.624, Florida Statutes, the value a renewable energy device such as rooftop solar adds to a home can’t be counted when the property appraiser assesses residential property. The rule covers devices installed on or after January 1, 2013.

Do I pay Florida sales tax on solar shingles?

Generally not on the solar equipment. Section 212.08(7), Florida Statutes, exempts solar energy systems and their components from sales tax, based on equipment the Florida Solar Energy Center certifies. Separately, the IRS says the federal residential clean energy credit isn’t available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Does net metering apply to solar shingles in Florida?

Yes, if your power company is an investor-owned utility. Florida Public Service Commission rule 25-6.065 requires those utilities to offer net metering: extra power is credited to the next month’s bill, and unused credits are paid out yearly at the utility’s as-available energy rate. Systems of 10 kW or less can’t be charged extra interconnection fees.
