Ridgecrest is an unincorporated community on the southwest side of Largo, north of Ulmerton Road around the north end of 119th Street, with Taylor Park just to the north. You’ll also see it written Ridge Crest. It’s an inland neighborhood of homes, churches and parks, and it has its own long history as one of the county’s historic Black communities.
Being inland changes the roofing conversation. There’s no salt spray or storm surge to plan around here. The Greater Ridgecrest area grew out of settlements like Dansville, where Dan Henry, who came from Georgia, bought land and by 1946 was dividing it into lots for African American families. Many worked in the citrus groves that surrounded Largo. Over the years Dansville grew to about 80 homes, a church and a store.
Today Ridgecrest, FL is a census-designated place of just under 3,000 people, and homes range from older houses to ones built in the last few decades. That mix matters when you’re pricing a roof, since an older home may need decking and ventilation work that a newer one doesn’t.
What the 1992 Tornado Showed About Wind
On October 3, 1992, a tornado tore through Dansville, destroying 26 homes and damaging many others. Pinellas County helped residents rebuild, and Habitat for Humanity built dozens of replacement homes in the years that followed.
